Aug One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco is Kokkari Estiatorio. I go there every time I am in town. Located in San Francisco’s financial district, Kokkari is named after a small fishing village on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea. It is also the sister restaurant to acclaimed Evvia Estiatorio in Palo Alto, California. Designed by award-winning architect Howard Backen of Backen & Gillam Architects, the decor captures the feel of the European old-world. Kokkari’s Food of the Gods menu features many Aegan dishes, from seafood to game. The first starter worth trying is the Horiatiki – a classic Greek salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, green pepper, red onions, olives and feta cheese. Another must-have appetizer at every table is the pan-fried Kefalograviera cheese with lemon & oregano called Saghanaki. Who can argue with fried cheese? For a most refreshing salad, try the Karpouzi me Feta – watermelon and feta, topped with pine nuts, basil and Greek olive oil. Read more » 0

Aug So by now you should have figured out that Kia and I are basically two women who like to live and eat well, with some major hippy tendencies. We like it when delicious food is also organic, locally-sourced, and can be part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. When we heard way back in January that True Food Kitchen was in the works nearby, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. CEO and President of Fox Restaurant Concepts Sam Fox said the restaurant would be “unlike any restaurant in the nation,” and their philosophy “celebrates high quality locally-sourced ingredients to create a unique menu that tastes great while nourishing mind, body and spirit.” Usually when hippy restaurants offer organic, locally-sourced, seasonal, or “all-natural” fare, this usually means the menu is vegetarian or vegan – which ultimately means Kia and I won’t eat there. Meat and dairy are important options for us, and while we love “veg”, kale is not an appetizer and quinoa a meal does not make. Read more » 15
Jul The Location and Foundation Located on 29th and Broadway in the Midtown Manhattan Flatiron district, The Ace is a hip hotel in an unhip hood. In what was once the Hotel Breslin and SRO, the landmarked 1904 building has been completely renovated, while maintaining some of the building’s original details from mosaic tiled floors to coffered ceilings. With 258 rooms and 12 floors, Ace NY is the fourth outpost of Seattle’s Ace Hotel mini chain formed in 1999. The most prominent owner, Alex Calderwood, has been praised for starting a “new breed of hotels” and is known for throwing parties for grunge bands like Pearl Jam and opening a very cool barbershop in Seattle. Jan The recent Affiliate Summit show in Vegas allowed me to try out the Palms Place Hotel and Spa. A 47 -story glass tower, the Palms Place is encircled by LED sticks and was designed by Toronto-based design firm Yabu Pushelberg, and built by architect Jon Jerde. The hotel’s look incorporates high tech and hand-crafted artwork featuring fine materials like honed slate flooring, marble surfaces and wood accents. The ceiling in the Rojo Lounge even incorporates a strip of gold. The Rooms The 599 studio, one-bedroom and penthouse suites are fully furnished and boast incredible views of Las Vegas. The studios measure 600 square feet and include hardwood and marble flooring, 9-foot ceilings, two flat-screen televisions, a fully-stocked state-of-the-art kitchen, plenty of closet space, a balcony, king-sized bed and queen sleeper sofa. About designing Palms Place, Yabu Pushelberg said, “The Palms is about feeling sexy, but in a subtle way. It’s not all tits and ass everywhere – that the patrons can bring.” 23
Jan Taking museum dining to sophisticated new heights, The Modern is a fine dining restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) featuring the original French-American cuisine of Alsatian-born Chef Gabriel Kreuther, with desserts by Marc Aumont. If you eat in the dining room, the dessert menu is out of this world! Read more » 17

Dec If you are looking for a hotel destination that has architectural allure, conveniently located near Beacon Hill, this is the place to be. Built in 1851, this artistic granite masterpiece was once the famed Charles Street Jail. It was transformed into a hotel in 2007. Guests are given the option to stay in the former jail area or in an adjacent tower. I reccommend the jail, otherwise, what is the point? The original red brick cell walls surrounded me in my sleep. The holes from the jail cell bars remain well preserved to remind us what the room once was. The Clink Bar features tasty modern cuisine. The architectural flavor? You are seated in cozy nooks which were once the original jail cells. The Alibi bar is located in the old drunk tank. The original bluestone floors and brick cell walls showcase celebrity mug shots. For dining I also reccommend Scampi, located at the bottom of the hotel, for tasty Italian fare. The bartender informed me that it was once the sheriff’s office. Truly one of the coolest hotels I have ever stayed at. I met an older gentleman there who had been there before, but not as a hotel guest. He was a jailhouse “guest” for auto theft back in his teens. He was more than a little uncomfortable with the jail’s transformation! Check it out next time you are in Boston. Learn more at www.libertyhotel.com. -Kia Theme design by Chix Creative.
