Some argue that Earth Day celebrations have outlived their usefulness, but it has become fairly evident that climate change is real, and its effects on the planet are widespread and devastating. The time to do something about climate change is now. So Earth Day should serve as a means for us to learn new or different ways on how to reduce our impact on the environment. I love it when artists donate their skills for causes they believe in. I just found this great font released recently by The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA). It was created exclusively for Font Aid IV to benefit the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The font consists entirely of ampersands, to represent the idea of people coming together to help one another. Type designers, graphic designers, and other artists from around the world contributed artwork to the font. The font is being be sold for $20 USD and is available through font distributors Ascender Fonts, Veer, FontShop, and MyFonts — and the distributors will be foregoing all of their commissions from sales of “Coming Together.” All proceeds from the sale of the font will go to Doctors Without Borders, to help with their relief efforts in Haiti. Feb Last weekend Kia and I attended the Social Entrepreneurship Forum sponsored by the USC Marshall School of Business. It promised to be “an inspirational day of learning and discussion about successful social entrepreneurship models, marketing and financing a business.” To be honest, before this event I didn’t realize that the term “Social Entrepreneur” existed and was intrigued by the idea. Jan  On January 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti outside the capital of Port-Au-Prince. The Red Cross estimates about 3 million people — one-third of Haiti’s population — were affected by the quake. You can help earthquake victims in Haiti by providing emergency assistance through GlobalGiving.org. They have partnered with local and international organizations to provide emergency relief including food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. Support GlobalGiving’s Relief Fund for Haiti Earthquake, which is allocated amongst all projects, or give to the efforts of a specific organization at http://www.globalgiving.org.

The organization has provided $33M worth of free health care to over 350,000 patients with the help of 36,675 volunteers since its inception. Approximately two-thirds of this total is in the USA. RAM provides free medical care to all who come see them, not just those in remote areas. They treat the working poor, who are either underinsured or uninsured and can’t afford basic medical services. Even though “Earth Day” smacks of some nouveau-hippy’s lightbulb moment, it was actually founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin back in 1969, as a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.
