So by now you should have figured out that Kia and I are basically two women who like to live and eat well, with some major hippy tendencies. We like it when delicious food is also organic, locally-sourced, and can be part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

When we heard way back in January that True Food Kitchen was in the works nearby, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. CEO and President of Fox Restaurant Concepts Sam Fox said the restaurant would be “unlike any restaurant in the nation,” and their philosophy “celebrates high quality locally-sourced ingredients to create a unique menu that tastes great while nourishing mind, body and spirit.”

Usually when hippy restaurants offer organic, locally-sourced, seasonal, or “all-natural” fare, this usually means the menu is vegetarian or vegan – which ultimately means Kia and I won’t eat there. Meat and dairy are important options for us, and while we love “veg”, kale is not an appetizer and quinoa a meal does not make. Read more »

Earth Day 2010Even though “Earth Day” smacks of some nouveau-hippy’s lightbulb moment, it was actually founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin back in 1969, as a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

Some argue that Earth Day celebrations have outlived their usefulness, but it has become fairly evident that climate change is real, and its effects on the planet are widespread and devastating. The time to do something about climate change is now. So Earth Day should serve as a means for us to learn new or different ways on how to reduce our impact on the environment.

You can go beyond everyday recycling, reducing and reusing. Below are some ideas on how you can go big:

Kia and I are very excited to present her brand new wood business cards!

These little eco-friendly showpieces are made from sustainably-harvested birch, which are planed into a thin veneer. Cutting them thin like this yields a large quantity of product from a small amount of raw material.  The cards were manufactured using very little power and no water, and made by hand in the USA.

The cards are sturdy yet flexible and are incredibly smooth. Their thickness is similar to two sheets of 90 lb. cover stock put together.  The wood grain varies on each card, which makes each one unique.   And ever since it was pointed out that they smell like popsicle sticks, I can’t help but think of summertime treats and heat every time I hold one in my hand.

The wood is biodegradable (they can be chipped and used for mulch) so we hope that when you’re done with our cards, you’ll pass them along to a friend, recycle them or use them as mulch.

The cards were printed by our friends at Night Owl Paper Goods, who like us, are committed to conserving and protecting the environment. Night Owl replants trees each spring, to replace the ones they’ve used.  We appreciate their sourcing and printing processes, and chose to work with them mainly because of their eco-friendly wood products and their environmental policy, but also because their paper goods are just so darned cool. Continuing down the list of our Top 10 Favorite Green Products of 2009:

envirosax6. Envirosax Designer Reusable Bags

OK, so these particular bags might not be organic, but they are reusable. These lightweight, durable sacks can be reused for years and then recycled — which means you won’t be using a new plastic bag every time you go to the store. Envirosax uses an eco-friendly print process for their bags, and their manufacturer meets all Fair Trade guidelines. They do carry a line of organic bags but we like the cuter graphic series because you don’t have to be organic to be green.
